Euro 2008: Group C Breakdown

with 2 comments

The “Group of Death” plays Monday with the following fixtures:

  • Romania v. France (11:30 EST)
  • Netherlands v. Italy (2:30 EST)

The remaining games in the group will be held on June 13th and 17th.

First In: The WC trophy holders, Italy, will be the first through, despite the retirements of Totti and Nesta, and the injury of Cannavaro (for link, see the general preview). Their combination of organization in defense and great creativity on offense is difficult for teams to counter. They are poised to make a great run.

First Out: Netherlands will get lost in the fray, despite Edwin Van Der Sar keeping them in it.

The real battle in this group will be decided in the first game. If France wins, they should go through with confidence not withstanding the result of the 2006 WC final rematch with Italy on the third match day.

If Romania, largely thought to be dark horse of the tournament, are able to score the early upset against France, they should be able to make it through to the quarterfinal.

That said, this is the “group of death” and I’m not the first to admit that it would not surprise me to see any combination make it through, except for a combination of Romania and Netherlands.

Next, I finish my group previews and make my knockout stage picks.
