Euro 2008: Group B Breakdown

with 2 comments

The second group plays Sunday with the following fixtures:

  • Austria v. Croatia (11:30 EST)
  • Germany v. Poland (2:30 EST)

Both of these games are supposed to be on ESPN 2. This means they should also be in HD (hooray!). The remaining games in the group will be held on June 12th and 16th in similar time slots.

First In: Tournament favorites Germany should coast through this group. That said, they are 0-3-3 (W-L-T) in Euro competition since winning the 1996 trophy. With the return to international competition, and an on-form finish to the club season for skipper Michael Ballack, they look poised to do very well.

First Out: Austria. The other host, unable to pick up a win, will go crashing out.

The second match on the first day will be a fine rivalry. Poland is not nearly a Germany both in skill and organization, but with such historical overtones, it is always a very heated rivalry. This addition should be no different.

The Poles, however, do not posses the skill that Croatia does, and will likely yield the second spot out of this group to them. Croatia’s squad beat England in Croatia (2-0) during qualifying and then managed a 3-2 win at Wembly when England’s Euro dreams were on the line on the final day. In total, manager Slaven Bilic, won nine of twelve qualifiers (two ties with second qualifier Russia), and turned down a million-euro contract that the national organization could not pay.

As with Group A, my second pick out of Group B is based largely upon coaching, which is extremely important when points are at such a premium.

On to Group C
