Greg Mankiw: How to Write Well

leave a comment »

Greg Mankiw, Harvard Professor and former chair of the CEA, has a great article on how to write well. I found the following especially useful:

  • Keep your writing personal. Remind readers how economics affects their lives.
  • Keep it simple. Think of your reader as being your college roommate who majored in English literature. Assume he has never taken an economics course, or if he did, he used the wrong textbook.

His recommendation to read writing style books is good, also. You can never have to too much of this stuff, because the old adage that “practice makes perfect” holds with writing.
